I'm going to have to come back to this review after I've processed things a bit. I'd give it a little over 3 stars. The idea was really interesting, as was the character, but altogether I was a bit underwhelmed. The narrative goes back and forth from 1980s Saffron to 1600s Emer. Those parts flowed well, and they did keep my attention. This wasn't the fun YA modern-day pirate adventure I thought it would be. That in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing, but this one didn't really feel YA to me, it felt more adult (with sexual situations, rape and violence). And then parts of the book seemed disjointed. The interspersed passages on caring for dogs were interesting at first, but then didn't really seem to fit in well. Some really good ideas that kind of came together. I'll still try out more from the author.
